Operating entirely on a voluntary basis, we are one of many local groups across the UK affiliated with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM RoadSmart).

Our group offers the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driver Course, designed to help drivers develop advanced skills, increase confidence, and become safer, more responsible motorists.

The Kent Group and the IAM Roadsmart Course

The Kent Group of Advanced Motorists offers the well-regarded Advanced Driver course from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM Roadsmart). This course is perfect for anyone passionate about driving more safely or those who seek to boost their confidence behind the wheel.

By embracing the principles of 'The system of car control', 'The Driving Plans', and enhancing hazard awareness and observations, you will grasp the fundamentals of improved control, smoothness, efficiency, and safety at every corner, junction, roundabout, and hazard during your journey. Our program helps drivers refine their observations, allowing them to identify hazards and situations much earlier—principles that are also taught to Advanced Police drivers.

Typically, this is achieved through around six driving sessions (sometimes more), starting with a brief lecture followed by practical experience with our qualified observers. Our friendly observers will assess your driving in your own vehicle, providing guidance on better techniques and knowledge to enhance your awareness and safety as you prepare to pass the IAM Roadsmart test.
